Artist Statement

I collect postcards from Museum Gift Shops or cards that I have received as exhibition announcements. Using these cards, I collage body parts cut from a variety of sources, including Mexican porno comic books, erotic playing cards and London tart cards. Then working on the computer, I integrate the disparate images, by overlapping, and receding the new information into the other artist’s painting.

A formal concern of mine is to have the collages look as if they actually belong in the original image. Conceptually, a new meaning is suggested that results from the dialogue between the collaged elements and the postcard.

After the collage is complete, I create a painting on a larger scale in oils on linen or paper. As the painting evolves, the work becomes a communication between the other artist and myself. I acknowledge his/her style but I assert my own vision in developing the composition.

Finally, the painting is reproduced back into a commercial postcard. The new card references Art History but also comments on contemporary culture.
